Maui is widely considered to be an island paradise, and it’s clear to see why the second you touch down. Another one of Maui’s strong points is its stunning beaches; however, picking just one and sticking to it may not be the best idea. With over 80 named beaches across 120 miles of coastline, deciding on which beach to visit can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why we’ll be discussing our picks for Maui’s top beaches for swimming.

Kaʻanapali Beach

Sunset at Makena Secret Beach in Wailea, Maui, HI

When you picture a classic Maui beach vacation, you’re probably imagining Ka’anapali Beach. The 3-mile stretch is home to several resorts but is completely open to the public. Ka’anapali’s long stretches of sand make it a comfortable place to visit without feeling too remote, with plenty of shops, hotels, and restaurants nearby. This beach also has a lifeguard station at the southern end. Stick around until sunset at this Maui favorite and take part in a long-standing cliff jumping tradition at Black Rock, also known as Puʻu Kekaʻa.

Wailea Beach

Another premier travel destination here on Maui, known for its soft, golden sand and turquoise colored water. Because this area is protected by South Maui's geography, much of the water here is very calm and gentle, making it perfect for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and snorkeling. Although the water is calm and shallow, we suggest you play it safe if you visit, as there are no lifeguards on duty. If you plan your visit from December to April, you’ll get the chance to see humpback whales from the shore!

Kapalua Bay

For a calmer, more visually stunning beach day experience on Maui, head over to Kapalua Bay. This scenic cove is known for its smooth water that’s perfect for beginner snorkeling. Its crescent shape adds to the area’s splendor and creates soothing water conditions, making this one of Maui’s best-protected beaches. Like some other beaches on this list, there are no lifeguards on duty, so we recommend that you keep safety in mind at all times when visiting this wonder.

Napili Bay

Another crescent-shaped appearance on our list, albeit with a bit more privacy than some of our other picks. This beach offers a much more low-key and family-oriented environment than others on the list. Napili Bay is also an incredible snorkeling spot, with sea turtles commonly found on the rocks towards the sides of the bay. If you plan to visit them, be sure to stay at least 10 feet away from them in water and avoid touching them. Another thing to note about the beach is that while there are no bathrooms or showers on site, many visitors use the facilities at the nearby resort.

Swimming Safety and Reef-Friendly Tips

While Maui’s beaches are beautiful, ocean conditions can change quickly. Before swimming, check the posted signs warning of danger, and avoid entering the water if waves or currents look rough. Stick with your group or nearby swimmers whenever possible and stay within your comfort zone. As stated before, many of the beaches listed do not have lifeguards, so visitors and swimmers are urged to exercise caution when swimming or snorkeling.

It’s also important to help protect Maui’s reefs and marine life while enjoying the water. Coral reefs are diverse and delicate ecosystems that host much of Maui's marine wildlife, meaning even the smallest actions can have a significant impact. Use reef-safe sunscreen, avoid stepping on coral, and give sea turtles and other wildlife plenty of space. Reef-safe sunscreen is sold regularly in Hawaii, so avoid using other types brought from home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Maui Beaches

Can you swim anywhere in Maui?

No, not every beach in Maui is ideal for swimming. Some beaches are better for surfing, sightseeing, or coastal walks, while others may have strong currents, rocky areas, or rough shorebreak. Before getting in the water, always check posted signs, watch the ocean conditions, and avoid swimming if the water looks too rough. Beaches like Kaʻanapali, Wailea, Kapalua Bay, and Napili Bay are popular choices for swimming when conditions are calm.

What is the safest beach to swim in Maui?

There is no single beach that is always the safest because ocean conditions can change by the day or even by the hour. However, beaches with calmer water, protected coves, and nearby facilities are often better choices for casual swimmers. Kapalua Bay and Napili Bay are popular for their more sheltered settings, while Wailea Beach is another favorite for a relaxed swim day. Always check current conditions before entering the water.

What is the best beach in Maui for families?

Kapalua Bay, Napili Bay, and Wailea Beach are all strong options for families looking for a relaxed beach day. These beaches are known for scenic settings, softer sand, and enjoyable swimming conditions when the ocean is calm. Families should still keep a close eye on children, stay near the shore, and avoid swimming during rough surf or strong currents.

Which Maui beach is best for snorkeling?

Kapalua Bay and Napili Bay are two of the best beaches on this list for snorkeling. Their cove-like settings can create calmer water, making them popular with beginners and casual snorkelers. You may also spot colorful fish or sea turtles near rocky areas. If you see turtles or other marine life, admire them from a safe distance and never touch, chase, or feed them.

What should I bring for a Maui beach day?

For a comfortable Maui beach day, bring reef-safe sunscreen, water, towels, sunglasses, sandals, and a hat for sun protection. If you plan to snorkel, bring properly fitted gear and check the conditions before heading out. It’s also a good idea to bring a reusable bag for trash so you can leave the beach as clean as you found it.
